Filming a Civil Ceremony in Kingston-upon-Thames

Ines “Vid Chick” Telling

For 4 July, American Independence Day, Peter and I headed over to the lovely town of Kingston-upon-Thames to film Stephanie and Ken’s civil ceremony at the beautiful Lovekyn Chapel. 4th July was quite appropriate and no co-incidence as Stephanie, the bride herself, is American. It was going to be a very simple but elegant wedding with a minimum number of guests – 2! yep, you heard that right, two witnesses and the couple. The smallest I had done so far had a total of five, so now have broken my own record. Stephanie wore a very unusual wedding dress, knee-length, with the skirt entirely made up of petals.

Her bouquet had the most a-mazing colours, a riot of pink, purple, orange and red…

This is the first time I have filmed a wedding at Lovekyn Chapel and after 18 years of filming in the industry you would have thought I had filmed in every church or chapel this side of the Dartford Tunnel :-) – apparently not.

Lovekyn Chapel is in the Diocese of Southwark and is also known as Chapel of St Mary Magdalene. It is a beautiful grade 2 listed church and originally a chantry chapel dating back to 1309. The medieval chapel is licensed for civil marriages, naming ceremonies and civil partnerships, it can house up to 60 wedding guests (not that we needed it ;-) .

After a little champagne reception in the lovely chapel courtyard we all headed off to Hampton Wick Pond which wedding photographer Victoria B suggested as a great place to get some wedding photographs. The entrance to this wonderful and secluded park is by the Old Kings Head pub just after you cross over Kingston bridge. Here is a google links map in case you’re interested… I’m sure the champagne helped a lot with the fun photo shoot we had!

The couple have now flown to France where they are having a second civil ceremony under the Eiffel Tower – jealous, MOI?!! Next week is another busy week with a wedding at Wotton House in Dorking – another venue I haven’t been to! – on the Friday followed by another first – Lulworth castle in Dorset. Exciting stuff. While I’m out filming Mr T will be at Silverstone for this year’s F1 Grand Prix, some people do have an easy life!

On Saturday 17 October Wedding Videographer Ines Telling from VIS-à-VIDEO and Wedding Photographer Jane Alexander from JA-Photos.com went and filmed the Wedding of Ben and Esther at the idyllic wedding venue Oaks Farm near Shirley. Wedding Venue Showcase courtesy of Pink Pumpkin

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Today, Vis-a-Video visited a wedding venue that I would just love to work at…Burrows Lea Country House in Shere, Surrey. The occasion was a venue showcase evening organised by ‘The Pink Pumpkin’, an award-winning wedding design and planning company based in Surrey. Although I have not worked with ‘The Pink Pumpkin’ before Sam and her team beautifully orchestrated the evening, which, as well as the venue, showcased various wedding suppliers, too. If this is an example of their work then any wedding they have a hand in would be a triumph. As well as obviously capable, the girls are also very nice!

The venue itself is a stunning country house, set in the most gorgeous bit of countryside Surrey has to offer. Although not huge, Burrows Lea feels spacious, yet intimate, the decor extremely tasteful and the people very nice. It offers accommodation, features a non-denominational chapel for wedding ceremonies complete with in house registrars and has the most wonderful rose gardens with stunning and far-reaching views over the Surrey hills. I don’t think I have breathed air this clean in a very long time. Intoxicating indeed, who even needs champagne…what’s that? Have a glass anyway? Ah well, who am I to argue…cheers!

There was a summer marquee set up for a wedding reception, accessed through the main house and the candle-lit rose garden, with opera singers, wedding cakes, wedding dresses, chocolate fountains and wedding photographers.

Tucked away in the far corner of the marquee we spied a counter with an array of delicious-looking bite-size tasters, so we ambled over. This turned out to be an excellent decision. Behind said counter we found Aubrey Thomson, executive chef of ‘Young & Wild’ , ingenious wedding catering, and he was only too happy to share his palpable passion for his food with us.

We tasted and sniffed our way through spanish olive olive oil, truffle-infused pecorino (Italian cheese made from ewe’s milk, for the un-initiated), hazelnut oil, violet syrup, balsamico di modena, wild Scottish salmon tartare on pumpernickel and quails eggs with celery sea salt…and my personal favourite: Angus beef, seared to perfection, with tomato chili jam and…chocolate dressing. Yes, chocolate.

Inspired and…well, ingenious. A perfectly orchestrated assault on the senses, the fusion of flavours was a wildly sophisticated attack from all sides with no hope of escape for someone with an appreciation of good food. Like me. Just leave me here…or at the very least: I’ll be back!
